I've been casually playing on http://chess.emrald.net/ the past few days. With a LOT of time, I can get the easier problems. But overall, most of the problems crush me. And the ones that I solve usually take me much longer than the expected amount of time. If I were to register and play consistently, I'd probably stabilize around a 1000 level or worse. I usually understand the solutions when I see them, and can't figure out how I could have missed them much of the time.

How can I improve? Just plain practice, or something else? I think I only win games on this site because I've played low-ranking players so far and spent a lot of time analyzing positions. Thanks.
