What's a good way to open?

1. g4
1. e4

etc.

The first move can lead to almost any type of game. Perhaps you should ask this question after the first five moves or so.

If you like tactics, play gambits- most of them aren't completely sound, but if you're well prepared, you can crush an ignorant opponent(and some of these people can be pretty high rated) and if they are prepared, end up with maybe a half pawn disadvantage(for a 1 pawn gambit). Two interesting gambits are
The danish
1.e4 e5
1.d4 cxd4
3.c3 dxc3
4.Nxc3
You can also try sacking 2 pawns with 4.Bb4, but that's a bit risky
The smith-morra
1.e4 c5
2.d4 cxd4
3.c3 dxc3
4.Nxc3- exact same moves except against sicilian

If you like open games, play 1.e4. Here tactics tend to predominate.

If you like closed games, play 1.d4. Here strategy tends to predominate. 1.c4 and 1.Nf3 tend to relate to 1.d4, but anything can happen. Transposition is an issue too.

Try things like the Traxler, Dutch Defence, Halloween Gambit, Kings Gambit, Latvian Gambit, Evan's Gambit, Fried Liver attack. Anything that looks crazy is practically certain to be full of tactical ideas.

thanks, but please explain terminology, does it mean move a pawn to e4 then onto e5?

Haven't heard of the Halloween Gambit before but it sounds interesting could you give me the main line?

In Gambiteer I, GM Nigel Davies recommends gambits against virtually all Black replies to 1 e4. Playing a gambit is fun, and can lead to quick knockouts.
