From a completed RHP game, my opponent as White has just played h5. My thoughts were that the game was level, and at most I may be able to try applying some pressure to White’s isolated d-pawn. I played 29… Kd7 and regrouped my pieces. Instead, what’s your assessment of 29… gxh5 ?

Looks like there's a tactic with Nf4+ for black if white goes Qxh7 after gxh5. Other than that, not much . . . is there more?

I like it better, I mean after gxh5 29.Qxh7 Nf4+ 30.gxf4 Qf3+ 31.Kh2 Qxf2+ 32.Kh1 black looks pretty good. I looked, but wasn't able to come up with a forced line mate (though it's possible one exists). Your line seemed to work fine, because it got you the win, but this line seems fine too.

gh Qh7 Nf4! gf Qh1 Kg3 Bh4 mates, and I don't think he can decline the knight since Qg2 mates. Nice tactic dude! 😀

Black is to make the 29th move in the position given and Varenka wants you to look at 29. ... gxh5. So I assume you actually mean 29. ... gxh5 30. Qxh5 except that's not possible as the queen is on e4.

Thanks, yeah it's just a typo, I'll go edit it.

There it is! I knew somebody would find one 😉.

Seems like black would have picked up both of your 'h' pawns for the price of one with that capture. If you don't mind, which of your games was this. It would be interesting to see how your move played out.

Isn't there still Kg4, then f5#

He won. And it seems there is a forced mate...

Pawn on h5 prevents it.

Well spotted. :-)

I dismissed gxh5 too quickly on account of Qxh7. But as pointed out, White has to find something other than Qxh7 because of Black's Nf4+ forcing mate... which came as a surprise to me when I did my post-game PC analysis.

As the game went, I don't think White has any big problems. But a few careless moves allowed Black to win.

(I see someone has posted the game link - thanks)

I thing that black is at least better at this position and maybe winning after the exchange of Queen .
White bishops are like pawns those move at diagonals to me, black bishop has a target, knight is good placed, The Quenn side pawns are week.
Especially dark squares bishop is very bad.
Other opinions and improvements of white moves?

e.g 35.Ke2 Nb6 36.Bc3 Kd6 37.Bc2 and I can't see how Black can make any progress

The reason Black won the game is because his bishop and knight were able to work together to dislodge White's black-squared bishop from defending a3, while White's two other pieces were oblivious to this.

Compare my given line. Here the white square bishop keeps an eye on the knight going to a4. And secondly White's king may indirectly defend a3 by going to d1, to stop Black's bishop going to c1. There's more evidence of "team work" from the White army.
