Originally posted by Varenka- 14. Qxa7 Qxg2 would almost immediately suggest 15. Bxc6 Rd8 16. Rf1 e6 ... at which point black's position ain't all that peachy, queen is the only mobile piece, but has no support, and the rest of the pieces are still undeveloped. from here i would imagine 17. Nb5 f6 18. f4 Qxc2 19. Qb7 ..? alternatively 17. f6 Be7 18. Bb5 Qxc2 19. Qf2 ..? or 18. Qf2 Qxh3 ..?
Two questions:
- what if Black had played Qxg2 instead of d4 on the last move?
- after the played d4, what are White's candidate moves? I thought the chosen White reply was pretty spectacular. 🙂
- 15. Ne2 Qxg2 16. Rg1 Qd5 17. Qa6 Nxe5 18. Bf4 Qd7 19. Bxe5 Qxb7 20. Qxb7 Rxb7 21. Nxd4 ..? 21. Bxd4 ..? i'm not sure if this can be called spectacular, or if this was what you had in mind. but at this point black is still severely undeveloped, while white has at least one pass pawn and overall positional advantage.
Edit: just had to replay the sequence to make sure that i wasn't dreaming all of this up ... 🙂

If 14...Qxg2 instead of d4, then 15.Bxc6 Rd8 16.Nb5! And the inclusive of Qxh1+ Kd2 at some point doesn't help Black.
After d4, White played Be3!!

Now White's development compared to Black's gives White a won position.
I don't think i'd ever of spotted that...but now that I think about it, the idea behind it seems pretty strong:-
dxB
0-0-0 (planing RxN, QxR+)
EDIT: Ok....here's what i'm thinking
dxc3 0-0-0 cxb2+ Kb1 Rd1? Bb7 f3? Bxd1 [Nxb7? Rxd1+ Kxd1 Qb8+ Kd7 Qc8#]
if...
dxe3 0-0-0 Rd1 Rxd7 Rxd7 Qa8+ Rd1 Bxc7+
