Yep, last tourney he was in he finished at or close to last place, not ready for prime time but this time he is beating the big boys, except Anand.

Still, they are 60-70 points higher and he beat them with black!

But people don't just "happen to be" rated almost 2700. And the players he beat were quite a bit higher rated. (Ivantchuk is the highest rated player Magnus has ever beaten in tournament play.)

chucky is about 60 points higher rated. dont know about you guys, and gal, but I think thats not much.

the point here was that magnus is already routined tournament player. the fact that he is 16 has nothing to do with his skills.

Well it speaks volumes about his future potential. How many 16 YO's have there EVER been rated 2700?

He's not a routined player at this level yet, it's only his third tournament at this level, I believe (he struggled a lot at the first two). All the other players are a lot more experienced and higher rated. So it would be a great achievement for any player with the same amount of experience and the same rating. But the fact that he was still falling for scholar's mate eight years ago makes it a lot more amazing.

Not as amazing as saying *I* fell for scholars mate 8 years ago, considering I am a genuine old fart🙂
8 years ago, maggy was 8. Yikes.

When you get to that level of play, 60 points is about the same as a 1500 playing a 1700 (I would think). Look how long it takes Masters to get from 2500 to 2600. Yermo struggled with that margin for a time. If I was a betting man, then the 2800 would get my bet 9 times out of 10 against a 2740. To recap: Small rating margins are more daunting the higher you go.

maybe thats partly due to a change in the formula for ratings calculation....

no way. 2690 rated has much better chances beating 2750 than 1500 has beating the 1700. 60 points gap means that the stronger player is expected to score 0.6-0.7 (just wild guess, but i dont think its much more) points on average per game.

what comes to his age, Radjabow was also 16-17 y.o when he beat Kasparov (about 2840 at the time) And surely there are many more examples. So although its "cool" he won, its not THAT spectacular.
