We obey the rules.

1) Don't make too many early pawn moves.

2) Develop.

3) Develop knights before bishops.

4) Castle early.

5) Sieze open lines with the rooks.

BUT, we still lose!!!!!!!

WHY?!!!

those are the mind (positional understanding and planning), and there are hundreds of more principles which one has to learn and adopt. however, to win, you have to have a very strong body (tactical operations that make it possible to get those plans into action, in concrete variations).

Those are important tactical points, but they are not set in stone. You must be able to deviate from the "book" when an opportunity presents itself.

Having a good eye for tactics gets you a long way in chess, but also the ability to have a plan as to what you can do with your pieces if there are no tactics presenting themselves and being able to use your pieces to work towards a common goal. That is harder to learn, but your game becomes stronger when you get the hang of it.

Chess really has no rules, only guidelines. The individual position must be assessed with them in mind, but they should not be applied dogmatically. The chess of Tarrasch's time is behind us and the best moves are often paradoxical. See Watson's intriguing Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy. It will really make you appreciate the depth of chess.

Learn endgames, tactics, openings that suits your style...

And if you can, try to find a stronger player with a similar style willing to look at your games.

Ahh, if only chess were so easy that you could just obey a few very simple rules and win. Of course, if it were that simple then chess would likely cease to be interesting very quickly.

As someone else just said, they're simply guidelines. Learn why they are guidelines before you follow them, because otherwise you might find yourself "castling early" into the middle of a kingside pawn storm. You can't apply them independent of discretion.

Because if that would be all we would be all GMs within a week. Plus, you can obey rules but your opponent can do it too 😛

Don't listen to all these other people. What they're not telling you is that you need to know the SECRET rules 6 - 10. If you know those, you'll win every time. But you need to know the secret handshake before anyone will tell you.

The better you get, the more exceptions to the guidelines you discover.

The great Richard Teichmann claimed that chess was "99% tactics." He was wrong! After a great deal of analysis, I have discovered that chess is only 97.367% tactics.
