by Vladimir Vukovic - one of the classics of chess literature, imo. as i was reading through it again recently, (perhaps because i've also been re-watching The World At War'😉 my thoughts turned to the Art of attack more generally. attacks can be Art-ful or Art-less, i suppose, and examples of attacks that are only superficially Art-ful include those that lack sufficient preparation, those lacking sufficient force to be effective, and those that are simply the progeny of inferior strategic thinking.

I rarely go for an all out attack on the King's fortress. In fact, I have great dificulty in doing this and it often ends in tears. I tend to scan the board for small weaknesses and slowly gain small tactical advantages. Either that or try to go a piece up, then just force even swapsies and eventually force a pawn home.

Grampy made an enquiry along those very lines recently. unfortunately in doing so he slipped on a banana peel, to great comic effect. he really has missed his true calling as a slapstick comedian. it's in here, together with reply: Thread 121625

. a good example of an Art-less attack gone horribly wrong.
