I've selected three books to read for this year. They are How to Reassess Your Chess, Pirc Alert and Pawn Endings. My goal is to reach 1400 and stay there at the end of the year. I have Chessmaster 10th to analyse my games. I will also stop playing blitz games. I am not sure whether play the moves on a chessboard or in my PC. I also aim to play and finish about 100 games here as dmnelson84 said:

If I do these and devote myself, I think I will be able to reach my 1400 goal. I know all this stuff seems dull, but I needed to post it somewhere.

PS: I also need to tidy up my room.

PS2: Don't worry, I will read RahimK's threads 🙂

I imagine you'd shoot massively past 1400 in a years time 🙂 Although CM10 takes a lot of flak the courses on it arent too bad and should give you enough info to take you over 1400 in a few months with a bit of practice. Probably the best way to improve is to play longer games ie 60+ mins on some server or other.

Best of luck with it 🙂

If you want to improve to any level, you will have to work hard to solve your majour problem: the mental attitude. In a relatively short list of finished games, you resigned without good reason games Game 2431033 (a winning position), Game 2428857, Game 2431024, Game 2404351 (another winning position), Game 2424041, Game 2374289 (winning position), Game 2418296, Game 2408284 (winning position), Game 2919038, Game 2952653. Nobody can or should help you there.

I resigned all of my games in RHP at some point, but I admit that sometimes I resign too quickly. I think that is due to the fact that I hate giving material without compensation, so I resign as it's obvious that my position will detoriate really fast.

I don't think either of the two arguments is valid for the last game i showed: Game 2952653

That was a blunder. I thought that Bb3 c5 loses the Bishop 🙂

I have to agree. The best way to learn is to tough it out in bad positions. If you are trying to learn then you need to play them out. Otherwise you are playing to pass the time (which is perfectly fine).

I understand that it is hard to play positions which you think you are losing. But that is what you must do. Otherwise you are wasting your time planning how you will reach '1400' or any other arbitrary number. Try to win your games, not reach some meaningless rating.

Also, the readon for playing out positions in which you are worse is twofold:

1) Your opponent may blunder.
2) Many players don't know how to take a winning position and bring it home. If you resign you are just giving it away.

Just my two cents. Good Luck

Anthias I'd have thought you were over 1500 by now. Its a big mistake to let ChessMaster do the donkey-work of analysing after your games have finished. Isn't it better to do it yourself and learn?

I use CM to see my blunders and important shifts in the game. Why is this bad? I don't mean to critisize, it's just that I do not know any other way.

Which book to read first, by the way. The Opening, Middlegame or the Endgame one?
