At Calvia in Mallorca, the site of the 2004 Chess Olympiad the FIDE vice president was arrested after he reportedly head-butted one of the security staff. Apparently, he was trying to reach the stage during the closing awards ceremony to ask why several awards were not being given when he was wrestled to the floor by security. Later, he was arrested and sent to the local jail. According to reports, he was badly injure to the face, but not allowed to see an outside doctor.

The VP of FIDE was really beaten up and kept in jail for two days. See the pictures on playchess.com the chessbase site. The guy had a black eye and marks on his neck from a choke hold. It really puts the Spanish police in a bad light. The VP just wanted to get a message to the podium. If he had tried to bomb the place, they probably would have let him alone, but since he was a high placed member of FIDE, well-dressed, and unarmed, they decided to give him the business.
