Hence

1.e4?! e6 2.d4 c5!

a) 3.Nf3
b) 3.d5
c) 3.dxc5
I'm glad to see you.
I hate it when people play that line, so it's a great suggestion.

You've got to give squares to get squares.

Personally RC I play a narrow repertoire of openings. I am usually in familiar territory through the opening that way. I suggest find a few openings that you're comfortable with, and build variations around them. Try new ideas in blitz games, forge them with CC games into weapons, then use those weapons in regular club play.

what you talking about ice man?, anyone that gives 1.e4 a dubious mark needs his bum felt! I will take this matter up with the erudite trout fly in the spirituality forum! for obviously it a spiritual chink in his armour, 1.e4 e6 (yawn), 2.d3 and them Frenchies can play what they like.

New in Chess statistics reveals clearly that 1.d4 is "best by test" (see http://www.newinchess.com/Yearbook/Default.aspx?PageID=226). For this reason, 1.e4 is dubious.

wow, are we now to believe statistics, so that when i look up a line on chessbase and its states, white scores 51%, i think, wow that is the line for me? so it scores higher, perhaps your faith in statistics is like your love of the grammatical element, given to padantry. 🙂

51% for white is a bad line inasmuch as white scores 55% overall.

Correct. Statistics are not the cause, but the evidence.
