On my sigma chess engine I have an option to set it's playing strength by selecting a playing depth measured in ply...and I have a couple of questions about the meaning:

1) Does ply refer to 1 move for both black and white or just a move for one side?
2) What exactly does it mean?
2) Is there a rough idea of what playing strength you would get from say 4 ply or 6 ply?
3) Is there anything else I should know about this term?

1 ply is a half-move, or a move by just one side.
