How many of you have made what you thought was a private note about the game but sent the message to your opponent by mistake?

Good Idea.

You could set him up for a trap by doing it on purpose.

I rarely use the notebook, but this happened to me once. It was something like:

"Nf6 to block fianch. bishop."

Thread 77760

Here is a whole topic regarding a misplaced thread, it is quite amusing to read back on it now - but at the time it was fairly troublesome.

This happened to me once. My opponent thanked me, but luckily he didn't speak dutch. I've hardly used the notebook ever since.

In that case you would have had to make it a double-bluff. Nobody would start a real note in the notebook with "Note to self", so your opponent will think you are bluffing. So then you can post which move you would really like or not like your opponent to play, and xe'll do the opposite because xe thinks it's a trap.

Disclaimer: I don't take any responsibility for the outcome. Don't try this if your opponent seems to be quite naive (xe might miss the first bluff) or very clever (xe might call the double-bluff). It might be safer to put the note in your notebook.

Conditional moves (if ever this facility arrives here, of course) can also be used tactically.
In the days of writing and sending moves on postcards this natural facility was very useful, especially if the opponent was running behind time.

If I am writing messages to myself I tend to work on the basis of putting move sequencs rather then a single move - that way I can do all my analysis on a quiet night and just chuck out the moves quickly on busy nights.
