First time playing this variation of the Ruy Lopez. I'm not even sure what it's called but you track the c1 Knight all the way to g3. So, 1st question, what do you think of this opening variation and why isn't it played very often? Felt good for me.
I played it against a much higher rated opponent and thought I was doing very well. In a short series, he displaced my bishops (almost winning one) and won a rook for free. What did I do wrong?

I got impatient with playing hold off defense-like chess and wanted to make some room to roam on the kingside (thus my flawed reasoning behind move 21). Also, I didn't notice at all that my 2nd rank was overly vulnerable until he made that move. I was shocked, and almost gave up right there. ;( Lesson learned I guess.

Thanks for the input
Originally posted by 93confirmedI was pretty sure that would've lost both bishops, because as soon as he got a free move he was going to take it. And, that would've given his pawn an unfavorable outpost in front of my king. So, I reasoned myself into moving the bishop out first. Probably not the best idea, but that was the "logic" behind it. Looking back, I realize that wasn't the case, as I could move the bishop out the next move. Somewhere in there, though, he knocked my lights out.
Why not just capture the Knight with 34. BxN and then you could have had more room to breath.
