I am interested in playing chess with time control. I know that there is an option for "blitz chess" here in redhotpawn.com, but the maximum of initial time that you can choose for a game is 60 minutes; and I think that this is quite little.

So I would like to play chess with time control but with more initial time available ( for example 2 or 3 hours ). Can I play in this way at redhotpawn.com? If not, can you suggest another site where I could do that?

Finally I would like to ask if anybody knows which is the amount of initial time at professional chess tournamnts etc.

FICS (free internet chess server)
ICC (internet chess club)
playchess.com

Only FICS is totally free of charge, the other two give a free trial period.

I don't know about the other two, but at FICS, apparently everyone is preferring only blitz game, I can't find any oppononents for games longer than 60 mins.

the super GM tournaments are usually played in "classical time controls" where every player gets an initial amount of time of 2 hours for the first 40 moves, than 60 mins for the next 20 moves, then I think there's sudden death after the next 30 mins, but I'm not sure about that.

in many non-super-gm tournaments however, 90 mins + 30seconds in addition per move or 60 mins + 30 seconds is applied.

For serious live chess with long time controls, it is best to play in a brick and mortar club with people face to face. I'm sure there are some tournaments or clubs in your areas. If not, consider starting one.

BTW: Most people play blitz online and save the gourmet meal for OTB play.

Yep, OTB (over the board) games are the most fun, imho, but if you can't do that, here's some information on internet slow play leagues and organizations. Most are on the ICC, but at least one is on the free FICS.

Edit - Also, it looks like the ANCL league on the Playchess server is still in operation (90 + 5 games):

try this site:

www.teamleague.org
its games are played on FICS, you can ask in channel 101 about it

it is a league with 45(minutes) 45(seconds increment/move)-I am playing there, the games are on weekly basis and I think it is fun as there are teams and standings and it is free
