I have recently been looking at a line against the Torre (not sure if this is correct to call it this if d5 not Nf6 is played 1st move, but nevermind) which goes like this:
1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Bg5 Ne4 4. Bh4 Qd6!?
what happens next depends on whites reply, before i explain the rest of the plan, could people please suggest what they would play in this position for white and why?
Originally posted by welsharnieWhite should have played 5. Nbd2 with a much better score than 5. c3. After 5. ... Qh6!? 6. Qc1.
Okay, 5.c3 Qh6!?
6. ... Nxd2 7. Qxd2 Qxd2+ 8. Kxd2
6. ... Qh5 7. h3 g5 8. Nxe4 dxe4 Qxg5
6. ... g5 7. Nxe4 dxe4 8. Bxg5
6. ... Nc6 7. c3 Qg6 8. Nxe4 dxe4 9. Nd2
Those I believe are the critical lines.
EDIT: Realised it's unclear that I mean after 5. Nbd2 rather than the flawed 5. c3.
5. Qc1 is also an idea for white, to which im not sure what is best, possibly i would play c5 in reply.
I have seen a few GM games which had Qd6 and Qh6 played in them, and think the position looks quite good, even after Nd2 I think black has a decent game. It also allows for the opportunity for people to play c3, which is very easy for people to play, missing the other plan of Qh6.
