I joined a 1200-1300 banded tournament about 6 weeks ago. When I joined my rating was a honest 1275. Afterwards, however, I began working on tactics and my rating has since jumped to 1450. The games are still going and my opponent's rating is 1200. Is it fair for me to continue this tournament or should I resign?

play on!
what you did was improve, so its their fault they did do as much of that as you did, so dont feel bad...
Yes, reap the rewards of your work while you can. If you stay at that level, you will have to play in higher banded groups next time you enter a tournament so you might as well enjoy it while the chance is there.

I have improved quite a bit lately too, I am kind of regretting I didnt sign up for a few under 1800 tournaments before I started on my upward spiral. Still, I invariably come back down when I have other things getting in the way of my chess.

If anyone says you shouldn't, please let me know and I'll talk to them. 😉

Play on. When you get to the finals of these banded tourney's you will usually find that almost no one qualifies any more.

My rule of thumb has been that if I'm 150 out of the band, I resign. And I've done so many times. I feel that it's the best thing for the spirit of the banded tourney. But that's my choice. You make your own.
