5 Minute Game
I nick a piece in the opening and then enjoy myself
kicking the White Queen around the board.
I eventually lose the piece back.
I set a trap (19...Rxg2) that my opponent falls into it and I win.
I've been playing games like this all night.
Winning from the opening - losing it - resorting to traps and winning.
(In one game I forgot to play Nf6 and got hammered.)
Hi greenpawn dude and greetings to all earthlings, just wondered what you thought, I was on Jeremy Silmans site, not deliberately, i was just searching the Latvian gambit and this strange internet vortex sucked me in, bewildered, i regained consciousness and as the words became more legible i noticed that he quotes GM Joel Benjamin as saying that the Latvian is 'refuted', by the simple move 3.Nc3, obviously this is cannon fodder for a Latvian protagonist, just wondered what you thought, nice game by the way!
😀 -
3.Nc3 has never given me any trouble, though it's usually played
by players who have never seen a Latvian before and my wins were
against players I would expect to beat anyway.
However if Joel Benjamin makes such a bold statement then I'd
better have a look at it.
Half of me hopes he's correct so I can develop into a normsl chess
player and put this opening behind me. I drop it for a year or two,
have great results with the Pirc and Modern then start playing it again(?)
3.d4 is the move the Latvian players hates to see the most.
If there is a bust, then I think it's in here.
Drew with GM Jacob Aagaard today. Yes. I played the Latvian.
He played the 3.Nxe5 line. Where you there?
Originally posted by greenpawn34no greenpawn dude i was not there, sadly i had a less exciting engagement, alas, alas, will you post your game for our benefit, you are no doubt probably shattered, so i can wait. the Joel Benjamin quote is taken not from Silmans site, but Wikipedia ??, i quote '3.Nc3 American grandmaster Joel Benjamin has claimed that this sensible developing move refutes the Latvian.', Silmans site, has some great quotes from the illustrious and always entertaining Roman Dzindzhichashvili, 'blacks position just sucks', etc etc - kind regards Robbie. 😀

I think it's an excellent book with masses of original analysis.
Talking of Jacob Aagaard, he kindly responded very quickly to a query I had about a book publication from his Quality Chess website via email.

No. It would only scare me seeing all the lines I've been playing
and getting away with.
My main source is from a pile of magazine that was dedicated to
Latvian gambits games only. (now defunct)
Full of tricks/traps/ideas that players have actually played.
I tend to play better when my back is against the wall
(we all do) - in the Latvian your back is against the wall on
move 2!
Not surprised Jacob emailed you back. He's one of the good guys.
