i'm looking for a decent one but nothing over 50 so far i've found New York Times Chess which says it can beat 95% of all players at its top level. and also i've found travel chess and checkers that says it has a rating of 1650. any thoughts? or is there something better out there. htanks.

I don't know about specific models, but just keep in mind that most, if not all, of the manufacturers overrate the advertised rating levels by 200 to 300 points. If you're concerned about knowing the real rating of a particular model, you'd have to consult one of the dedicated chess computer rating lists NOT compiled by the manufacturers.

Since none, or very few of us will ever play someone with that high a rating, what is the purpose? Unless of course your using it to beat your challangers as many out there are doing. I,m all in favor of buying the best when you can afford it, but in our business if owning a chess machine was outlawed we would all be playing something close to honest chess. Its like golf; if you have no honor, you really have no win. The money I have spent on books I could own the best engin out there, but I took the high road and continue on, losing games.

He said he wants a travel computer. Those cost money. If he really wanted to cheat, he wouldn't need to spend any money, he could just download a free engine and use that. And the free engines off of the internet are much stronger than any dedicated chess computer he could buy. So he clearly wasn't intending to cheat with a simple travel computer.

if you had a cell phone you could download chessmaster on it, or go on RHP, but that would require being able to surf the web.

well i have surfed the web for palms. they dont really say strengths they just say theres like 73 differerent player settings. that could mean each setting is 5 points higher than the last starting from 1100 that would not be tough to beat. i just want info from people who are using palms and which ones are good and which ones aren't

... or Schredder which is a standalone program in your phone. No need for the web.

All of the cheaper travel computers are worthless. Chessmaster mobile is really bad also. Chess Tiger is ok and is available for Palm:

Also HIARCS has a free trial:

and seems pretty strong:

I have Chessmaster on my Nintendo DS lite. It's actually a GameBoy Advance cartridge, but the DS is capable of playing them. It's very strong as well. I'm not sure of the rating, but I've heard at its highest level it plays stronger than a strong club level player (1800?)

According to this site it plays as good as a "weak" club player:
