I'd like your thoughts on the Wilkes Barre Variation of the Two Knight's Defence. That is:

1. e4 e5
2. Nf3 Nc6
3. Bc4 Nf6
4. Ng5 Bc5!?

I hope to play it in my next tournament OTB and I haven't been able to find much material on it online and can't really fork out for a book, with Christmas coming up. So if anyone has any ideas or thoughts on this line of play, I'd like to read them!

My datbase (CM9K) has very few games involving it, although the majority are wins for black.

Eh, I think that with Bxf7+ white is probably better, but it's super complicated and who knows what can happen. I am sure if you are booked to the gills you can will a crapload of games with it, especially against people that don't know Nxf7 is a terrible move. Even though you said you can't shell out the cash for a book, I would recommend Pinski's book on the two knights, it has a section on the Wilkes Barre, and is probably the most up to date if any of the theory changed.

You might find useful Tim Harding's three articles on the Two Knights. Here's a link to the first: http://www.chesscafe.com/text/kibitz58.pdf

White has to suffer quite a bit in the Wilkes Barre variation (very much like in the Marhall Attack in the Ruy Lopez).

IMHO, White should have an advantage once he/she gets through this storm.
