I understand that the USCF is in a crisis in funding a US championship after they lost their previous sponsor, but is it this bad? I don't like it...
"The first $15,000 raised by USCF through Patron fees and other fees or donations will go towards covering USCF's $15,000 commitment to support this event"
😕
Wow, I knew things were bad, but it seems it's worse than I thought. I WAS aware that the consensus was that the USCF was lucky just to HAVE a US championship this year. So I guess you have to aim at the really important things, like even having a championship, even if there's criticism of the funding methods.
So lets see, where did I put that extra 50 grand that I had no use for?
Originally posted by Mad RookThat might be a bit of an overstatement (I don't think it was ever really in doubt that they'd hold some sort of championship, somehow), but still, these patron fees aren't as brilliant a fundraising scheme as they probably think. There's gotta be a pretty short list of people willing to fork up that kind of money...and the ability to play in the US Championship probably isn't a huge incentive if they weren't already going to donate that money. It'll be interesting to see how many entries like this they get.

Actually, in recent years, the adult membership in the USCF has been declining. This trend might be reversing now, but it's still too soon to tell, imo.
Even under the best of circumstances, it's not easy for the USCF to get sponsors for large events. Rumors persist that one member of the USCF executive board is scaring away potential sponsors. I expect this problem to be corrected in the next EB election (this summer), but until then, the USCF will have to suffer.
Originally posted by Mad Rookyes there is the shady USCF board member that everyone is objecting to. I think Susan Polgar's "platform" in running for USCF office mentions this questionable character.

as for the USCF, in general, the organization has been run by simple- minded people who don't have a clue how to run a business or how to reach out for corporate sponsorship.
susan polgar would be great for the USCF; she has initiated quite a few chess related projects on her own initative.
