First of all, may I say that I do not use them and do not intend to. A glance at a few of my games should convince you of the truth of that. My question is: how does anyone know that someone is cheating? How do you know they are not simply a strong player?

Can anyone elaborate a little? I could understand it being fairly obvious if a weak player suddenly started to play strongly, but what if a new player was using software right from the beginning? How does anyone know?

Look at the planning moves. Computers and humans will match frequently on moves carrying out a plan however its unlikely that computers and humans plans will match time after time. It the style of play you need to look at.

Also humans tend to be a little (or a lot in some cases) dynamicly orientated where as computers are often materialistic.

First off lets assume Out cheat is using a strong computer program.

Fritz 9

he has 6 games against high rated playing winning everyone.

so the admins check it out - and run their own fritz 9 going through every move in those six games.

Now if the analysis is the same 95% of the time then you could safely conclude that they are using fritz 9. because all the moves match up.

Even if they were using crafty, (or another strong engine) many of the moves will still match up seeing as all engine aim to play the best move 24/7

^^ thats one way of catching cheats, I'm not sure how many other methods the're are.
