In your opinion which of the official World Chess Championship matches has had the highest quality of all-round play?
Please exclude Capablanca-Alekhine 1927 and Fischer-Spassky 1972 from your considerations.

Karpov-Fischer 1975.Not a single bad move made by either side! 😛

Seriously,I'll go with Tal-Botvinnik,1960.A choice probably influenced by the book.

Btw,why exclude Capablanca-Alekhine and Fischer-Spassky?

Because I'm already analysing those.

World Championship matches are often nervous affairs due to what
is at stake. I would always pick the Fischer-Spassky match.
I play over the games at least once a year or when ever I pick up a
different Fischer-Spassky book.

Karpov - Korchnoi 1978 is a good match. The Keene book covering
the event is one of his best.

I know it's not a WC match but the Tarrasch v Chigorin 1893 match
has some wonderful games in it. Tarrasch notes them up quite
instructively in his 300 Hundred Chess games
It's here he makes his famous note about one of his own moves.

"White misses a billiant opportunity to resign."

Hmmm. That’s a tough question. Though I’m not qualified to say I’d go for Kasparov/Karpov NY/Seville.

But on the entertainment value, I’d have to go with Kasparov/Short. One sided maybe, but Short did force Kasparov into some nice tactical mêlées in the Sicilian.

Probably not the highest quality but i always enjoyed the Alekhine - Euwe matches.

Quality wise - probably Kramnik - Leko, due to the nature of the players.

Can you recommend a good book covering the 1972 Fischer Spassky match?

The book by Gligorich is one of the best.

As another poster suggested Spassky's view would be interesting
but he's so lazy, I cannot think of any book he has written.

(The worstt WC match must be Capablanca-Alekhine 1927)

How about Petrosian-Spassky first match. Exchange sacs galore, including the brilliant game 7.
