I came across these two games by Wang Hao.

Both start

1. e4, e5
2. Nf3, Nc6
3. Nd4

How does this not lose immediately to either Nxd4 or exd4??

In both games black played 3...Bc5 ??

In the second game E Romanov resigns to Wang Hao on his 17th move. Hao's Queen appears to be hanging?

Can anyone explain this to me?

i dont believe that. Nd4 simply loses a piece.

The games probably actually went 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Nxd4 Bc5

I checked out the Romanov game on Chessgames.com. Yup, that is weird, I'm going to run it through my CB Database, possible that the moves weren't entered into the db correctly. I remember reading an article on Chesscafe.com a while back about FIDE's carelessness in releasing ridiculous scores from games, which could also be the explanation.

Look on Chessgames.com. 3. Nd4 is listed as one of the options. Hao played the move twice. The first game continued:

3...Bc5
4. Nxc6 Qf6.
Draw

The second game is longer and includes Hao apparently hanging his Queen. Romanov resigns to Hao and my take on the game is that he could have taken Hao's Queen and lost no more than two minor pieces in the process.

The game ID 1370537. It is a game from the World Junior Championship.

check if 'white d pawn' or 'black e pawn' was recorded being moved later in the game.
I did look at that and they didn't move again.

I think there are other problems with the game. Romanov seems to take Hao's knight and then Hao doesn't take the Bishop back.

The black Knight on e7 must get taken off of the board somehow or else Hao's queen hangs for 2 or 3 moves.

Whoever said it was mis-reported was probably correct.

yes, i'ld say they were correct saying they stuff it up. it's a shame.
Maybe someone will play me using Chessgames and decide that Nd4 looks promising because of the win and the draw.

I can only hope.
