I was a traitor, and was playing chess on a different engine (yahoo), the other day and I curious position arose. Im not a real endgame buff, I think i had at least a draw. what do you think?
the position when i offered the draw was (I played the dark forces)
Its White to move, possible continuations welcome.
White:
King: h2
Rook: g2
Bishop: f6
Knight: c5
Pawn: a3, b4
Black:
King: g8
Bishop: f5
Pawn: h5, g6, d5, c6, b7, a6

Originally posted by KarldoggWhite will definetely win this game. You are too far down in material. White's first move will be Nxb7. Then you have 3 pawns more and he has a knight and a rook more. You will lose your pawns eventually in my opinion.

The next move would of course be Nxb7, and after that black's queenside pawns don't look so good. White can (soon if not immediately) play the knight back to c5, and the A pawn is a gonner, and white will have a passed pawn on the kingside. What could black possibly do to salvage the game?

Originally posted by PyrrhoOf course white wins. Nxb7 is the obvious first move, but by no means "the" move to make, almost every move is good. The b-pawn won't run, otherwise the a-pawn falls, which is equally bad.

ps I still would like to see the result of the game. I hope we are not helping a game in process (be it on another site).

Originally posted by Mephisto2Of course you're right - I should have said that "my first move would be Nxb7", and leave the "of course" out. Personally, I just didn't see anything that would be better, anything that would compell me to delay the capture of the pawn. Might be wrong of course... I never was good at this infaliability thing. 😉

I'm so sorry, I also forgot that Black had a rook on e3.
So what it was was black had 4 pawns to a piece, White was threatening a capture on b7, and black was threatening a capture on a3. My feelings are we could trade rooks somehow, and then trade 2 pawns, white will have 2 minor pieces, to blacks 1 minor piece, and 4 pawns. I think the position is at worst a draw for black, but again, i'm not an endgame buff.
So the postion was really:
White:
King: h2
Rook: g2
Bishop: f6
Knight: c5
Pawn: a3, b4
Black:
King: g8
Bishop: f5
Rook: e3
Pawn: h5, g6, d5, c6, b7, a6
again, my apologies.
