Yesterday morning in an OTB tourney, I had black on move in this position:

When I spent three minutes thinking, my opponent asked why I was taking so long. I found the best move.

Yes, that's what I thought, too. White can't take the bishop with the knight, as that would immediately lead to checkmate. So his only choice is Kh1. Then Bg2+!, and White is in trouble. Or am I missing something?

I presume you mean Bh2+, Kh1, Bg3+. If so, then Kg1 and then?

I'm thinking Nh2 as an initial move with ideas such as Nxf3 or Rg6+.

I think it's Nh2. The knight cannot be captured, and if White tries 2.Re1 then ...Nxf3+ 3.Bxf3 Rg6+.

Edit: I'm never quick enough.

the rook on the 6th is the silent killer in the deep waters, I think. Nxe3 and all is lost.

Oops, yes, I meant Bg3+, of course (dang, never get those numbers right). I was planning on Bxf2+ after that, but I think it might be a dead end.

Nxe3 does indeed look strong and to the point. I didn't consider this move. I now prefer it over Nh2, but maybe there are multiple ways to win this with Nxe3 being easiest.

Any defences to Nxe3 or Nh2 or even Rg6 ?! Others?!

i dont know how you can get that bishop to move like a rook too, but i'd like to know your secret.

Read the whole thread, and you'll figure it out. I have had little practice with notation.

Yep, and it is mate in two.

I went on to tie for first in the reserve section in the tournament with a win and loss today. $125! Should go up to about 1660 or so.

Haha, this position is just about any attacking players dream. I am pretty sure there are about 8 million moves that win here. I thought ..Rf6 was a pretty humurous, telling white he can't do anything about mate in 2. Also, ..Rg6, with the same ideas as Nxe3, also looks winning. But I suppose Nxe3 is probably still best. 🙂

Mate in two, three, and four, respectively. Lots of other moves maintain a decisive advantage for black. Three minutes on the clock, and I played the quickest mate. Would that it were always so.
