I think the best are the pocket PC's with Fritz or shredder, etc. installed. I don't have one but have been investigating them, and the pocket pc's seem to be the strongest, most versatile. You'll need to install fritz, tho.

I have Palm Zire 31 with ChessGenius & Hiarcs software. I would recommend Hiarcs as I like it's style and options better. Hiarcs also has free updates and it's quite strong http://www.hiarcs.com/palm_hiarcs.htm#phvgm.

Hope this helps.

Don't think about bring it to OTB games because if they see you, or think something its going on, or frequent washroom breaks after each move... well you can figure out the rest.

well of course... (i probably should be embarrassed but i don't know what OTB is) i assume it's tournament play, but I live in the middle of freakin nowhere with nary a checkered 8x8 within a few "hunerd" miles. since i failed in my attempts to convince my girlfriend that she likes chess, i don't get the chance to play other humans all that much outside of RHP. i'm just looking for the convinience of chess anywhere-anytime. long trip, short trip, waiting room, uninteresting movie- chess convinience and challenge to improve my game... all of your suggestions have been helpful. thanks for the advice.

I hear cell phones have pretty strong chess programs. One of the top GMs was playing vs it before their OTB(Over the board) game started and he got a draw, and the other GM was making fun of him. It was someone like, topolav and shirov or one of those other big guys. And since lots of people have cell phone maybe it woudl be cheaper to download this program.

It was Ponomariov from memory. The picture is on www.chessbase.com but I can't seem to find it.
