I was winning this game and thought I had it in the bag, but ended up losing. Can anyone suggest what I could have done better?

Instead of 8.d4, 8.NxN QxN 9.Re1 seems to leave Black busted. 9...Be7 fails to 10.Bb5+, 9...Qxd5 to 10.Bc4+, and anything else that saves material is going to allow a huge attack.

Haven't had a chance to look at the rest, but I shall do later if I can.

at move 13 when your knight rook @ h8 was the major mistake for me.
because when this happens the queen side castle blunts your attack.

if the knight had taken the bishop @ E7, then you would have forced the queen to take cover. at this stage you would have exposed the king even further and come out a major piece to the good. there was also the risk your opponent would have made a mistake and check mate would have been yours.

i am sure better players will spot other things and quite possibly blow my theory out of the water.

When you attack a particular square be sure to count how many defenders & attackers that square has. Be sure to include pawns if warranted 🙂

Out of curiosity, by move 33 were you able to see pretty much how the rest of the game would go?

If only chess had a rule that you can permanently remove one of your own pieces from the board just before you make your move, you would have been in great shape at move 13! And if only pigs could fly!

Looks good to me.

I also agree with dan182,Nxe7 was the better move. You don't always have to go for the 'bigger piece'.

Also, I really don't see what was wrong with 17.cd after 16...Nxd4? 17...Qxd4 fails to 18.Qxd4 Rxd4 and White is simply material up. Did you miss the fact that the Qg7 defends d4, or only consider 17.Qxd4 after which 17...Bc5 wins for Black?

Taking the Be7 was a bad move from the practical viewpoint, as even if there are chances after that your open King gives you too many opportunities to go wrong. Black played that part of the game pretty well to wrap it up.

hmm...
I truly don't see the point of 8. d4. Then again, that knight is a problem anyway. probably the best thing would just be to let that damn d5 pawn go. and play immediate 7. d3.

13. Nxe7 would have left you a piece AND a tempo ahead (since he'd have to flee the queen) Q moves somewhere, Ng5+ THEN take the rook off

18. Re5 would have been nice, and prevented the fork nonsense

20. Qxf4 would have been better on principle, as well as tactically -- up in material = offer trades. 20. ... Qh4+ 21. g3 fxg3 22. Qf4 and I think you're ok, though it's one of my usual wildly quadruple-edged tactical messes

from move 21 onward, you're dead. I think his simplification leading to the position around 33 wasn't strictly necessary, but it worked. I woulda gone with 31. ... Qa3+ and generally closed in with the queen until the opportunity to actually WIN material arose.
