I think nothing prevents ratings from becoming negative.

Well, I have bad news for you. I'm pretty sure your rating can never be more than 400 points below the weakest opponent you have played, so at the moment it's not possible to hit 0 or go below it.

Go to "Player Tables" in the navigation bar above and then go to the last page (ranked high to low). Lowest rating is 573.

You're thinking of the old formula. RHP's is a bit different. But even under the old formula, negative ratings are possible if you have enough people who are rated low enough.
