As a relative new comer to the world of RHP and chess in general would somebody please enlighten me with a brief explanation as to what a FEN is, how it is read and what its significance is.

FEN as far as I know is a code representing a chess position which you can feed into chess databases/computers.
FAQ stands for Frequently Asked Questions and you should read them before you ask any silly questions.

There's no such thing as a silly question if you are just starting out and want to learn things. If you don't ask, you don't know!! You, of all people, should know this, as a 13 year old (if your profile is correct).

So what? Ask Google, ask a forum of chess players. You'll get the same answer. Google is quicker, but the forums give more reliable answers.

Of course the forum also throws out the condescending answers, the sarcastic answers and the downright arrogant answers that you have to deal with. But the forum has one advantage Google doesn't: it identifies the village idiots to be ignored and avoided.
