When chess programs play themselves without an opening book, they generally play the same openings (usually the petroff, but depending on the engine). However, the games aren't identical as there is some randomness if the moves are tied for best. In addition, there's randomness in how much time they decide to use for each move, so thinking deeper, a program may find a better move.

Or has it already been done. I'd guess that he would win as white, perhaps draw though. Then he should switch sides... no wait.
Would multiple games be identical?
I can set Fritz to play itself. 90% of the time it draws. The rest of the time there is a winner. This is usually due to it following a line in it's opening book it can't understand and making a mistake straight out of it.
i think deep blue was not anywhere near as good as it pretended to be ... it was dismantled imediately ... before it could be "busted"
it played kasparov ... but kasparov has shown a lot of egotistical and naive foolishness with regard to anti-computer methods ... the games were often analysed as being quite silly.
i imagine any of our top three players could do a more perfect job - playing correspondence of course.
