Here's a post I wrote before to define OTB more thoroughly (hence the verbosity):

"Over the Board: Rated face to face play with clocks, standard chess pieces and boards as per the rules of the overseeing federation for your country and supervised by a qualified tournament director. It usually refers to time controls an hour or longer per side but it can apply to blitz too. Although when one refers to OTB in the context of serious chess, they mean long time controls."

good description.

I find that OTB tournament play is the best. Usually only serious players who are actively seeking to improve play in these (nobody pays money AND spends an entire day or more on the weekend to mess around). It's a good way to match up against tough competition and see where you stand.

I find tournament OTB tournament wins much more satisfying than OTB casual, CC or internet blitz wins. Of course, the losses are harder to swallow as well.

Yeah, the definition was for OTB tournament play. However, technically, OTB just means face to face play regardless of anything else.

Not knowing what OTB means puts you on the suspicious players' list here on RHP. 😛

Oh... I thought not knowing the word 'engine' puts you on the suspicious players's list 😉

I shouldn't worry - half the top 50 on this site don't know either 😉

Those of you who don't know what OTB is and are over 1500, are welcome to send me challenges. I'm looking for people to bash on the board with one of my eyes closed, and they would do nicely.

Well, whoever visits this thread would know what OTB is so I guess you will not have much success in getting challenges 😉

Kramnik OTB, at least according to that criminal Silvio Danialov. The lines between may be quite thin.

Aha! Of course, OTB can be a double entendre! 🙂
