Agreed. I went through that shortly after I had started playing, and it helped me to get an RHP rating well over 1500 easily within half a year from starting to learn chess. It takes much less effort than reading a chess book.

Join a chess club.

Play long games, 60 mins +

DO study openings, the advice that beginners shouldnt study openings is just the biggest crock of s*** ever. Stay away from the complex lot....open siclians etc but take a look at the more classic openings and the ideas behind them, Evans gambit or Scotch are a good place to start. You will get more natural and playable middle game positions if you understand how to play in the opening.

On here keep a note book of your games. When you make a move write down your thoughts about the move....why you made it what else you considered etc. After the game you can see how the move worked out, was it good or bad.....did it have consequences you didnt consider, this should help you identify weaknesses in your thought process which is a big corner stone of chess.
