I'm sure you're right, most people here know more than me, but why is it an even position? White is a pawn better off?

white is only a pawn down if black let's him and I was wrong white has a small advantage but it is better then facing the Ruy Lopez line for elaphant e4 e5 Nf3 d5 exd5 Qxd5 Nc3 Qa5

OK, so this would be the position

AT first sight d3 seems the most appealing move.. Blacks replies might include ed, f5 or Bb4. but white would stand better
4. Bb5+ looks good as well.

In the elephant gambit:

After 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 d5 3. exd5 e4 4. Qe2 Nf6 5. Nc3 white has the problem that the queen is blocking the light squared bishop, and this will cause white difficulty in completing his/her development. The problem is that there is almost certainly a sequence of moves that allows white to get the upper hand, which is what is going to be played in a correspondence game; so I think that this is only really going to work for black against an unprepared opponent in OTB play.
