I recently played a game as White where I tried conventional development but Black held his pieces back and pushed me back with his pawns (203540). What should I do against this defense? It's too unconventional for any of my chess books.

Probably not best to seek advice while the game is still active. What I recommend is that after the game is completed, repost and ask for advice/feedback about how you played. This will help ensure that your opponent doesn't cry "fowl." Kirk

Sorry, I didn't know it was already completed. OK, first thing I notice is move 10 you take enpassant and for some reason it didn't allow you to take the pawn. I have seen this happen in another game between Fernando and the PO. I would alert Russ. Kirk

I should have mentioned that the game was done.

During the actual game capturing en passant worked fine. It's just intermittent going through the game history.

I'm confused. Wouldn't it entirely screw up the game history if the move wasn't accurately recorded. Kirk

I've noticed that once in one of my game history. The history of the game has recorded the en passant (take a look on the coordonate)but still showing the captured pawn. Check also the 30th move when the White queen capture the pawn on c6.... She jumped over the "ghost" pawn!!! It seems that is just a poor little ghost who's haunted a chess board.... 😲

the ghost of the 'en passant captured pawn' also appeared in one of my recent games too. however, i recall the ghost pawn appeared when viewing via Public Games, not when viewed via My Games.

I've found that if youre opponent just pushes all his/er pawns up then developing youre knights early can realy annoy them. You see, knights on C3 or F3 are in a perfect position to take out forward pawns, or at least making youre opponent waste time defending them

This could only be against a certain Mr. Ross Green. 20 games against him and he's still making me look silly with my attempts at 'correct' developmental play and his steamroller pawns.

There are times when it's crucial to play the position, adhere to certain positional "rules" by all means but for all intents and purposes it's necessary to slightly adapt. Book openings require the other person to play along - when they don't the book openings aren't all that useful. Against a top-notch skilled player I would imagine they'd be able to pick apart such unorthodoxy pretty simply - after all, there's a reason why book moves etc are usually played - but against a hack like me I find it a lot harder and have to concentrate much more than I would otherwise.

I lurve players like Ross Green, having played a few games it's nice to play peeps who don't play like everyone else - keeps the whole thing varied.

About the idea of a massive pawn push, I need some advice on facing the pseudo-Austrian attack when playing the modern defense.

i.e.

1. d4 g6
2. e4 Bg7
3. Nc3 d6
4. f4

I usually get overwhelmed by the 3 pawns, and my g7 bishop gets choked.

Thanks a lot.

None of the pawns in the swarm are that far forward, i.e., they're well defended usually by other pawns.
