whats your favorite chess tactic? forks skewers pins or double threat? stalling games is not a tactic its just cheap. my favorite is the double threat so many times has a 1700 player pulled off a double threat on me forcing mate or a loss of matieral. But now that i finally understand how to do it i find it a very fun tactic to use

who doesn't. i'm talking about what do you find most pleasing when your playing a game and this tactic leads to a winning game or mate.

My favorite tactic is the one the current situation is dishing up for me. They are all delightful to execute. I read somewhere that all (or most) tactics are a kind of double threat. My favorite incident of a tactic was, believe it or not, a quadruple knight fork of his king, queen, and both rooks! Yeah, he was a pretty weak player.

Philidor's mate, or the smothered mate.
Clearance sacrifices (giving up a piece just to make room for other attackers)
Piling up on a pin (Alekhine-Nimzovich, San Remo 1930)

I don't care much for sacs, (I generally don't like the 'risk' involved) and so, I actually prefer just to play slowly, close the position then squeeze the life out of them, let them do the sacs!

Of course if chess were that simple ^^ i'd win every game.

Play your opponent after he's had a heavy meal with a lot of wine and place the board so that the sun is shining in his eyes.......words of wisdom from the Spanish bishop, Ruy Lopez, truly a great tactician.

Can zugzwang count as a tactic?...if not then triangulation certainly is a tactic. Its so pleasing to know that any move they make will destroy their position. *rubs hands in glee* 😛

Forcing a position upon your opponent in which any move they make will weaken their position is quite an effective tactic.

A list of tactics from "Win at Chess" by Ron Curry..divided into those which occur most frequently and those which appear less often:

Frequent Tactics
1. Superior force
2. Pins
3. Skewers
4. Knight forks
5. Double attacks
6. Discovered attacks

Less Frequent Tactics
1. Overworked defenders
2. Vital guards
3. Removing defenders
4. Deflecting defenders
5. Sacrifices
6. In-between moves
7. Vulnerable back rank
8. Interference
9. No retreat
10. Trapping pieces
11. Desperado
12. Zugzwang
13. Queening combinations
14. Underpromotion

hm not sure if I see superior force, desperado or underpromotion as tactics. The slight quibble I have with zugzwang is its normally the result of a tactic like trianglation and not a tactic in itself.

Although this is just splitting hairs 😛
