I'm feeling smug cos I just beat a higher graded player ... but where did he go wrong?

Is this a known 'trap'?

7. ... Be6 would have been interesting.

e.g.
8. Nbc4 Nbd7

I did a simul against some complete beginners yesterday and won a quarter of the games with mates based on Bc5, Nf6-g4, Bxf2 mate (I was Black in all the games).

I'd say 4. ... Bg4? got him into trouble. After 5. Nfe5 only chance is to play 5. ... Bc8 (5. ... Be6 is bad because it blocks the e-pawn) 6. Qb3 e6. But still white would be ahead in development.

3. Na3 seemed weird to me. If you sacrificed a pawn to get his d-pawn away from the center, then grab the center by 3. e4. Your bishop would still attack the pawn and you'd have a pawn in the center, instead of a knight at the side.

In my opinion you played the opening poorly but he even worse. However, I'm not an expert, so don't take my post too seriously.

3.Na3 is perfectly OK, it is one of the standard ways that White gets his pawn back. The one which surprised me the first time I saw it was 3.Qa4+, but that too is perfectly playable. I don't think 2. ... dxc4 is Black's best way of playing against this line.

Could be, I'm no expert. But what about 3. e4? I'd still think I'd play 3. e4.

I've never seen 3.e4 played (3.e3 is common), but it looks interesting.

e.g.

1.Nf3 d5
2.c4 dxc4
3.e4 Nf6
4.Bxc4! Nxe4?
5.Qa4+ Nd7
6. Bxf7+

looks OK for White.

3. Na3 is a very well establihed line! (Reti's own invention I believe.)
