I was amazed to find accidentally how many players on RHP are from South Africa. I wonder which country has the most participants. Great Britain? U.S.A.? Any way of finding this out short of counting all the countries?

But, I'd say USA, as Rahim says, because of Internet cost and accessibility. However, as Nordlys says, lots from the UK and a lot of good ones too.
Originally posted by NordlysCool. Haven't tried that before - 1 700 RSA, 22 000 USA, 8 800 UK plus a separate contingent from Wales, Scotland, Ireland and England which brings that total up to about 12 000. Also 1 700 from the Netherlands.
Find Player -> Search by country. Choose a country, and you'll get all players who fly that flag (of course, not all players fly the flag of the country they live in or are a citizen of).
These are registered, not active, players. Not a lot from France or the Nordic countries, so I guess they punch above their weight.
I guess you could also get a rough idea from CTS statistics:
http://chess.emrald.net/ctsTacCountries.php
the distribution is probably somewhat similar here, at least for the bigger countries. it's also interesting to see that median rating at CTS differs between countries. for example U.S. having almost 200 points lower median than netherlands. and with finnish median 1487 you'd get into the top 14% in U.S. -probably a lot of young scholastic players? I wonder if there's such difference on RHP also...

European cities are more into chess then especially Canada and then US. Look how many GM's you guys have compared to North America/South America.
It's probably because of the promixity to mother russia where chess was always huge and it diffused out.
That's why popular Gm's are promoting chess in the america's to get more people into is. Look at the polgar's in the States with the kids stuff.
I just know that around night time for canada and the states, Rhp forums are basically dead at least the Chess one, I don't waste my time with the other ones. So that's why I said the states, but it could just be that the other people aren't into the forums much.

I'm not sure how finnish players have treated soviet players in the past, but I'm pretty sure not very well. lot's of hostility because of the wars, and generally people have been very anti-soviet. except for a time in the 60's. however, the people who lived during war time are almost gone, and things are being forgotten. a lot has changed since I was a kid. (many americans probably have the misconception that finland has been somehow linked to soviet union, which it never has. finland has a lot more in common with sweden, even one of our official languages. well actually finland is almost exactly like canada. only smaller, and a swedish minority instead of the french. 🙂 )

As for the other thing, pure ignorance.

Yeah right.
Some of us backward Europeans don't even have electricity yet.😉
Born in africa under European control influence and lots of problems with electricity, water etc... Not reliable.
Backward Europeans 😛
Hahah you know what I meant! You know how much pizza is here? Compare it to the pizza price there and you'll see what I meant when I said affordable internet.

I got wireless internet from my Igloo. Amazing, no power, no water nothing, gotta cook over a open fire but yet you bring a labtop and you get wireless internet. Don't ask how I plug it in though.
Hint: Super super batteries 🙂
