According to the broadsheet, in which this was published at the weekend, this endgame problem took Jonathan Penrose [10-time British champ] half an hour to solve!

Surely there's someone out there with the nous for this! ?

Thanks for the bump - I had looked at it earlier but got interrupted or something; I remember this idea in a slightly different setting, in which 1. Qg8+ is the start of a mate-in-three (even if Black doesn't play Qxg8)... perhaps it is part of the "Personal Chess Training" programme run by Petrovitch.

It took me fifteen minutes even after reading the clue (i.e. key move) posted above!

Heinzkat PM'd me the correct answer - have to admit I didn't get it myself, purely on my inability to spot said key move above!
