Some older players seem to be able to improve their results at online chess dramatically and some don't.
I played sealion four times back in 2007 and felt that we were about the same ability. I certainly wouldn't have predicted then that he would become one of the best players on the site. Perhaps his children have left home now giving him more time to dedicate to chess!
He has a 0-4-0 (won-loss-drawn) record against Northern Lad, a 0-2-0 record against altern8, a 0-7-1 record against David Tebb and a 2-0-0 record against Pawn Riot.
Whatever the reason, he has certainly found some magic formula. I wish he'd share it!
Between Jun 03 & Aug 04, Sealion ambled along at c. 1850. Then he took a break (presumably), and his rating decayed to 1435. But in Oct 04 from this low point, he climbed quickly through his former ceiling into the 2100-2150 range and bobbled along there until Jul 06. Then a longer absence until Mar 07 when he again climbed quickly from (a decayed) 1371 to his former level at 2150. A range around that level was sustained until Xmas 08, hitting a low of 2070 at that time. Since then, over the past six months, his rating has risen inexorably to the foothills of 2400.

for example, during the last 2 years my ranking has been quite steadily between 150-200. yet my rating has gone up from 1800 to 2000 at the same time.
and we probably don't need to dig up the 1800-2400 rating graphs of practically any titled players. a LOT can happen in 6 years, EVEN if the rating pool was stable.
