There's other ways to make money than winning tournaments. Tom Dwan, one of the best poker players in the world, once bet $50k that he could beat a GM in a best of 3 game as long as the GM started down a rook. His friend David Benefield (also a poker pro) promptly took the bet and paid an IM $5000 to play Dwan, with the rook handicap. Of course the IM won the first two games easily. Not a bad job if you can get it.
I've seen ESPN2 broadcast a Scrabble match and a Dominoes tournament. If they can devote a half hour of programming to these two giants of the game world they can show a chess match or two. And if the announcer can fake excitement over a guy scoring 45 points with the word "peevish", surely he can feign interest in a rook sac.

On an unrelated note did you notice that Grand Patzer has the initials GP just like Green Pawn? Coincidence? I think not! 😀

Lol, yes it is a rather striking 'coincidence'. 🙂

I play in relatively a lot of chess touraments, (about 5-8 each year) and have decided that its not about the money. I play mainly in scholastic tourneys (<18), and enjoy myself when I go to one. The entry fee is usually only $15-$20, with a first prize of maybe $100 and a trophy. However, when I go to a tournament, I find that I simply enjoy playing an ...[text shortened]... enough. I guess at my level, its more about playing and having a good time than winning money.
You may even win some money (or a chess set).

Robbie, Scottish Open is kicking off with a rolling simul.
v WGM Arakhamia-Grant. come through and rake through the
2nd hand cheapo books.
Don't think I'll play, my OTB grade is 2001 and that means I have to
play in the top event and the entrance fee is £99.00.
Also got sacked from last job due to me sleeping in once too often.
That's 'cos I'm up all night on here trying to get you slobs to play good chess.
So hopefully will have new job then and cannot really get week off
when just through the door.
