No idea. Maybe the thought of getting a doubled Pawn was just too much for him. I've met people with that level of chess inflexibility and insecurity before.
He / she recently resigned to tournament games against me (and others in the group). Guess it is not just this game, but some personal affair forcing to resign. Maybe just too many games going.
