Today I picked up THE ART OF ATTACK IN CHESS by VUKOVIC (pergamon) in an old book shop for £1!

Looks like a very old book I think it was a 1968 print.

Here's the weird thing someone might be able to explain what it means - on the inside cover and back cover it has stamped:

RECIEVED, CENSORED & DELIVERED
to: 86982 name: Wilhelm Jakub Bruss Sr. date: 8-14-72

On the next page (8 years later) the owner has made the effort to get it specially signed by someone I can't make out Signature but the date was: San Francisco April 9, 1980

The signature is almost indecipherable and looks like: M then C/Srlong/y (last letters could be: lony, lerg, lng, lry. I know this is pretty hopeless information but wondered if itr was a famous chess player.

Also it had a book markmade up of of a 1972 newspaper print of a game between

Boris Spassky & Duncan Suttles
Vancouver op-CAN 1971

thanks..

I'd say your best bet is to scan the signature and send the picture to Edward Winter via email.

Actually, I would contact John Donaldson who runs the Mechanics Institute in San Francisco. If it was a strong player in SF at that time, or an event that took place, he would know. Off the top of my head, no one comes to mind though.

I think you can find contact info via chessclub.org or google mechanics institute chess club -

You're very welcome, it was a lucky guess from a quick google.
