I play on the playchess.com. My rating hovers between 1400-1500. am i considered an intermediate or beginner?
Which aspect of the game should i most emphasis my study on. I feel like my tactics are ok, but my opening play has some weaknesses to it. Would studying some openings be the best way for me to improve at this point? Or what would you recomend to improve my game?
Originally posted by FleabittenI've played only 3½ years, so I have very little experience. and excluding tactics, I don't really know much anything. my openings are weak, my middlegame is crap and my endgame is abysmal. I still drop material all of the time, make opening blunders and generally get myself in nasty situations for no good reason. I'm far from covering the basics, let alone mastering them. there are nothing but flaws in my game.
Why would you describe yourself as a beginner, if you don't mind my asking.
that's why I'm a beginner.

That is true if you are wannabe GM and a perfectionist with insane criteria. If you play chess for hobby for 3 and a half years and you are 2000 rated and consider yourself begginer then either you are unrealistic or we are all crap.
Being a hobby player within 2-3% best rated on a specialized chess site doesn't make you a patzer, really.
Fide median is around 1300-1400

Originally posted by wormwoodThank you for taking the time for that self-assessment, Wormwood. I suppose our definitions of a beginner differ. For instance, I'm currently coaching another player on this site through a series of training games. This is someone who doesn't understand the very basics and is a player I would consider a beginner. I think you and I would agree, though, that numerical rating is generally a poor metric when determining if one is a beginning/intermediate/advanced player.

just because the vast majority of us are too lazy to put in the required effort & time, doesn't mean that doing it half-assedly is more than a beginning. -I don't know if you ever tried to coach anyone, but they simply won't do what you tell them to. or they'll do it for a day. - that's not beginning, that's giving up right away. and guess what, they don't get better. not in a year, not in a decade, not in half a lifetime. there's no free lunch.
and that's fine, nobody is a lesser human being for being a casual player. maybe thay're even better? but to each his own. there are loads of things I treat similarly, but with chess I work. I'm way too lazy to ever become good, but I put in quite a lot effort anyway, because I enjoy training.

You may very well be new to chess, in terms of time frame, but in terms of playing standard, you aren't. It's as simple as that.
Most people who play on this site play many moves a day and have done for many months/years. The top players on this site are of international standard. Maybe not GM's but very, very good players. Korch has represented his country and i'm sure i've read that Northern Lad is an IM somewhere. You are in the top 2-3% on this site.
Give yourself a break and have a Merry Christmas.
