Cut all 5 potatoes once in the middle and you have 10 equal pieces. Cut those once again and you have 20. Cut again and you have 40. Give 5 of those equal pieces to each kid.

Is that what you meant by not using fractions? I don't know that term.

I'm with him. Just 5 times 8 = common factor. no divisions or fractions.

Occams potato masher would suggest the mashed idea is much easier, anyway, mashed is tastier... hmm butter, or what about a gratin made with 40 equal slices of potato? then we both win, a little garlic on top, screw it, make it 45 equal slices so I can have some too!
