Cut all 5 potatoes once in the middle and you have 10 equal pieces. Cut those once again and you have 20. Cut again and you have 40. Give 5 of those equal pieces to each kid.

Is that what you meant by not using fractions? I don't know that term.

Use a potato gun to peg the children with potato pellets. Make sure you peg each kid the same number of times as each other kid.

Plant the potatoes. Then you'll have plenty.

Feed all 5 potatoes to the first 5 children, then let the last three nibble bits evenly off the first five.

I'm with him. Just 5 times 8 = common factor. no divisions or fractions.

Occams potato masher would suggest the mashed idea is much easier, anyway, mashed is tastier... hmm butter, or what about a gratin made with 40 equal slices of potato? then we both win, a little garlic on top, screw it, make it 45 equal slices so I can have some too!
