She decoded it, and thought it was a symbol he wanted to get serious.
He agreed she had decoded it correctly, but claimed instead it was a symbol he just wanted to be friends.

I don't know what the symbol means, but yes, it is symmetrical and looks the same both horizontally and vertically.
