A rather nasty one. White to play and mate black in 4.

Trying to do this in my head and can't quite finish it, trying along the lines of...

1.c8! Rfxc8
2.bxc8! Rxc8
3.Bd7! Kd5/6

Then get a little lost, especially trying to visualise in my head.
Is this anywhere near?
What do you use to analyse games? Is there a notebook on tinernet that you know of please?

No, this doesn't work fast enough. There is no mate in 2 after your moves.

For puzzles and analysis, I feel there is nothing better than a real board (several is even better) and notes.

I didn't think it would be that obvious + there was no way of boxing in the Queen with that method.

I would like to use a board but I play the majority of my chess whilst I am at work - don't tell my boss 😉 didn't know if there was a free chess pad on-line because the analyse board on here is pretty pap.

I think it should be 1.gxf8! (underpromote to a knight) but can't do the rest in my head right now......

Something like....

1.gxf8(K)! Kd6
2.Qxd2! Kxc7
3.Qd7! Kb6
4.Qxc6#

Not sure if they are the best moves for black though?

4.Qxc6+ is not checkmate (Kxa7).

4.a8(N)#? Underpromote again to a Knight!! Nice problem

What is the notation for an underpromotion, I am sure mine is wrong?

4.a8=N+ is not checkmate yet (Ka7 or Kc5 live one move longer).

I am afraid 1.gxf8=N+ is not the solution.

Apologies for the time wasting exercise 😳

Think this one is probably beyond me.

No need for apologies. Problems like these require an elimination process. Your input may help others (or you) to find other moves.
