    Co-workers Wally, Jocelyn and Cy all leave home at the same time and arrive at work at the same time. Cy cycles to work three times faster than Jocelyn jogs to work, and Jocelyn jogs three times faster than Wally walks. If Jocelyn lives 12 miles closer to work than Cy how long are all their journeys?

    For a bonus point. How far away from work does Carl live?

    Cy = 18 miles
    Jocelyn = 6 miles
    Wally = 2 miles

    Bonus: Since Wally walks, Jocelyn jogs, and Cy, Cycles. I suspect Carl Cars, and at 3 times the rate Cy cylcles

    Carl = 54 miles

    @joe-shmo

    Ah...but....to walk 2 miles would take around half an hour

    So Carl is clearly breaking the speed limit, driving at around 100mph!!

    I guess we could then explore how slowly the other 2 jog and cycle!

    And why is poor old Walt walking 4 miles a day to/from work with such a disability??

    Surely he would be on one of those mobility scooter things?

    This is in the USA.
    He's in a huge amount of debt from the operation.

    For the record
    Wally walks at 2mph
    Jocelyn jogs at 6mph
    Cy cycles at 18mph
    Carl drives at 54mph

    Trying to be a bother, but the rates at which they walk are indeterminate as far as I can see?

    Put everything in terms of Wally's walking rate "w"

    wt = d_w

    3wt = d_j

    9wt = d_c

    d_c - 12 = d_j

    3* 3wt = 3*( d_c - 12 )

    d_c = 3* ( d_c -12 )

    d_c = 18

    We are left with a single equation in 2 variables:

    9wt = 18 <=> wt = 2
    3wt = 6 <=> wt = 2
    wt = 2

    What gives? I suppose they told you personally how fast they traveled...

    Correct.
    Just a bit of banter.
    I think the ratios are feasible and Carl doesn't have to get a speeding ticket!

    Sorry! I get confused easily at what is play and what is actual solutions...

    Incidentally: Blood on The Tracks! HA. good one!
