There's only a problem when you end it. The infinity part is what makes it true. But you know that. Apparently, the concept is lost on some.

no. as a fundamental principle 1 = 1 and nothing else. the rest is just logic that when you really analyse it just doesn't hold water.

I'm no mathemetician, and you are all clearly well educated in this subject, but...

isn't this problem as simple as:

1 / 3 = 0.33333.....
0.333... X 3 = 0.9999.....
therefore 1 = 0.99999.....

it would certainly seem to this layman that any effort beyond this is completely wasted...but what do I know
Your statement that 1/3 = 0.333.... is basically what we're trying to prove.

So 1 does not equal 3-2?

yes, 1=1, but it also equals 5-4, 6/6, (1/2)*2, and 0.999 recurring...

Take out a sheet of paper and a pencil.
Write the number 1 on it.
Put a long division bracket around it.
Write a 3 just to the left.
Do the math.
What is the result?
0.33333333333333...................
It's now proven, 1 / 3 = 0.3333333...........

...then get that 0.33333333.................., and multiply it by 3...😉

READ MY PROOF!

What part of it is unclear to you?! 0.999... is simply another way of writing 1!

It's funny that no matter what forum this topic is posted on, there will be dozens of replies, from those that understand the maths (and know it's true), and those that don't (that claim it's false). If for some reason you think the two numbers are different, come back when you've learned some proper maths.

Wow. That's amazingly simple. I think that solves the problem right there. Maybe you really are a genius.

Please...Hold the applause...
I will be signing autographs later

Yes, of course it does.

I believe I read something on this topic in an article that was focused on infinity, and how the human mind should cope with it. The theory in question was called the APOS Theory, and if I recall correctly 0.99999... is equal to 1, if we understand 0.999... as an infinite process.
I'll have to look it up though...

As a mathematician you have to pretend to understand six infinite things before breakfast. We'd all go mad if infinity was damaging to the human pysche... oh right, I forgot. 😵🙄
