Mind the gap

Not really a poser (or Puzzle) ,but.......

I saw a sign on the tube the other day that said "mind the gap - Last year 52 accidents)

is it me or does those kind of statistics have the opposite effect as intended?

approx 2.7 million passengers a day (crossing the deadly gap at least twice)

0.0000026% of all crossings result in an accident, shocking stuff. I think we should fill the gap in.
